The very first calculating machines

The ancestor of the computer

The road to the later multimedia computer was long. It took centuries before the first mechanical calculating machines were built from the ancient abacus. Although these could initially only add and subtract, they already laid the foundation for the later computer. Calculating machines made it possible to perform calculations more precisely and with a lower probability of error. Since the usefulness of these machines found application in many areas throughout history, new and improved versions of the calculating machines were constantly being developed.
